Everything Everything Movie

The Everything Everything Movie, really brought out Nicola Yoon's book with a heart-wrenching, powerful, and an intelligent, romantic tale about Madeline and Ollie. Madeline was diagnosed with a rare disease as a baby, and is forced to stay in her house for the past 18 years, because she is "allergic to the world", and any small illness, such as a fever, could be life-threatening. Everyday was the same...she was always bored and miserable in her house. That was until, a teenaged boy named Ollie moved into a house right next to Madeline's. Even from first glimpse, Madeline was interested in Ollie. They communicated with each other through text, and instantly became more attached to each other and created a strong bond with one another. Through the movie you see how love can truly make people risk EVERYTHING to be with one another, even if it means losing EVERYTHING. As great as the movie was, nothing can top Yoon's writing and how the book takes you even more on an adventure. I suggest reading the book before watching the movie. In the movie it felt like the story was being rushed, which made it not as enjoyable as the book. There were also some minor tweaks that were made to the movie, that also made it not as great as the book. But other than that, the movie was truly astonishing.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The Guardians of the Galaxy are back for another amazing story. This time with the addition of Baby Groot! (He's probably my favorite part of the entire movie).  This movie does a really good job at concluding the first one. The audience gets to see Nebula and Gamora's sisterly love again *sarcasm* and we get more of Rocket's amazing roasts of The Star-Lord. Not only that, Drax develops a sense of humor!

Personally, I think this movie is pretty good but the first one is better. It's like, I wouldn't mind watching it again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it. As always, the characters were great but the plot was little undeveloped. But take some time this summer to check this movie out, it'll be fun.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon - Kelly Reagan Barnhill

In the Protectorate, the people live in
constant fear of a witch from the forest. This witch requests the youngest baby born that year to be presented to her on The Day of Sacrifice. This horrible tradition causes one mother to lose her mind when her baby is taken away from her.

Xan is the witch in the woods. She is kind, loving, and compassionate. Every year, Xan finds a baby waiting for her in the forest. She takes care of this baby and moves it to the cities on the other side of the forest. One year, Xan falls in love; she decides to keep a baby for herself.

This story is engaging but also doesn't enchant the reader. It's like a slow song that you can't help but sway to but not something you sing along and jump around to.

Half of a Yellow Sun by: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Often, we find ourselves stuck within the confines of our own worlds. Our rooms, our homes, our cities; they're safe and comfortable, but there are fascinating places outside these bubbles that are so worth exploring. Through this book, Half of a Yellow Sun, the late '60s, a tumultuous time in Nigeria, were explored through the perspectives of four main characters: Ugwu, a houseboy; Odenigbo, a university professor with revolutionary ideas; Olanna, the beautiful almost-wife of Odenigbo; and Richard, an English writer who has fallen in love with Olanna's twin.

Learning about Biafra-a failed republic I didn't even know about- was actually really interesting from this book. After watching a TED-talk by Chimamanda, I knew I had to read some of her work. The characters are down to earth and impossible to dislike. The country itself is a beautiful place that struggles to overcome the legacy of colonialism. I honestly didn't think this is the type of book I would like, but seeing Nigeria from the lens this book provided was a worthwhile experience for me.
