The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan is an intense reading book describing a life of Chinese immigrant in America. The story is tell through two main character, Pearl and Winnie. It is a very good book that portrays the difficulties of bicultural life, the conflict between fate and self-determination and female position in a patriarchal society. The story took place at California in 1992, when there were still sexist and racial discrimination (even till this day). This book also discuss about the American Dream and American Nightmare. I recommend this to 12+ and even though the author tone is optimistic, the overall story is pretty depressing.
